Formula One Update
SUPER LOTS OF PICTURES (and one video), SO PLEASE BE PATIENT~!! I had half the mind to split this entry into two parts but heck.
Besides, I hate disjointed posts.
So anyway I went for the Friday and Sunday’s session (my sister took the Saturday pass) and overall it’s okay I guess? Friday’s practice was buh-ring but it got much more interesting at the finals (thankfully).
Oh and one more thing, these days I’ve been very lazy to resize, sharpen and adjust the lighting of the photos in Photoshop so please make do with blur/dark and manually resized pictures~! And for maximum viewing pleasure, all images are click-able (i.e. enlargeable by clicking) so click awayyyy!
Friday
Met Sam at City Hall around 6.40 before making our way down to Padang. Crowd was pretty thin and manageable (but it got worse progressively) so we had no problems getting around and finding seats at the makeshift food stalls…
…which by the way is EXORBITANT.
shrugs
But what do you expect right? Laksa is 6$, one piece of otak is 3$, bak chor mee (mince pork noodle) is 8$, hot dog+one side (fries OR mash OR onion rings) is 10$ so on and so forth. Both of us had Korean, which by the way, was 1) horrible tasting 2) small in portion.
Not forgetting, oil laden as well. 8$ for this "Fried Chicken Rice" which only speaks true for the first and the third word. May I repeat again, WHAT CHICKEN??? Got chicken meh?
You’d DEFINATELY need this if you do not wish to go deaf or bleed from either side of your ears. I kid you not – the sound from the race cars are so loud that if it hits one more decibel higher, the Pearly Gates up there will crumble and fall.
Squirmed our way into Padang Grandstand to watch the practice session.
I had to switch my camera to ISO3200 just to capture the cars. Lol, the rest are either just blur, or an empty car track. ZOOOMMM!! Too fast
Anyway it got a little boring after awhile so Sam and I decided to explore the entire area.
Zouk brought their club into the arena as well, so there was a make shift dancefloor and mini bar planted inside.
Didn’t stay till the second practice session so we left around 10-ish. Bernie met me at City Hall before going to TPY Mos Burger for supper. I wasn’t hungry at all though but just needed something hot.
… and because you can’t see his face in uniform, I’ve got to subject you to looking at mine instead
! Lol.
Don’t ever drink this stuff. It’s super gross and highly YECHHHH.
Saturday
It’s non F1 related so I posted it in another post. See here.
Sunday
Met Bernie for lunch in TPY and we had our:
Mango Alishan Tea with Ai-Yu Jellyyyyyyy! I love this better than the regular boba tea
Took a bus back to my place for a quick nap again. We’re always sleeping… Woke up and snacked like crazy.
My sister’s boyf bought this for her and it’s super addictive!! They’re mini garlic croutons-esque chips which taste exactly, no scratch that, BETTER than normal garlic toast. Love it!
Awww, my supertrooper
"Cheeky Chicken". So we came up with a few – "Slutty Salmon", "Bitchy Beef" and "Fucking Fish". Lol.
I know I look super tired and haggard but c’mon, cut me some slack here!! I just woke up from a long nap feeling extremely hungry =X
Took a bath and prepared to head out for dinner at Whampoa Food Street (Keng) Fish Head Steamboat Eating House. What a mouthful!! But the steamboat there is certainly the best. Can compete with Tian Wai Tian but I feel the fish stock is better than the latter.
We reached around 6pm and already the front seats were taken/reserved. So we were given the "back lane" seats. Thankfully we weren’t subjected to the kitchen’s exhaust fumes and also, it was surprisingly cool that evening.
Red Grouper (红石斑鱼) Steamboat in Medium – SGD40
They were so generous with the fish which was very sweet and tender! The stock is thick with the absence of burnt smell (brought about by grilling the sole fish for too long) so kudos to that. All 4 of us were lapping the soup up dry so you can imagine how fantastic it was.
Hotplate Toufu – SGD12 (thereabouts…?)
Certainly not the best but I would say it’s not bad. Taste very much like the pork sauce from the can but when put together with all the other ingredients, it was satisfying. No complains there!
Fried Sweet Potato Leaf in Sambal – SGD8
Tasteless. It was the "Miss" of the night.
Fried Mussels – SGD10
This was a mega hit! The gravy reminds you a lot like the typical chili crab kind because of the eggy mixture and sweet spicy combination. Bernie couldn’t stop drinking it like soup
Very worth the 10$ I’d say!
Dish X – SGD5
Can you figure out what it is? Lol.
It’s FISH EGG!! I’m impressed at how they served it in a different fish broth (much nicer than the steamboat stock) and well, fish egg just taste like fish egg.
Service
I’ve heard bad reviews about the service there (I’m not sure if they’re referring to the main outlet at Balestier or the branch at Rangoon Road) but we met none of that sort during our first dining experience. The PRC staff were all polite and we had no trouble filling up the steamboat with more soup (came in a kettle, not bowl).
There was one particular Singaporean lady there though (I suspect she is the boss) who is curt. She wasn’t rude or anything but she never bothers to look at you when taking orders. If you can look past that I guess it’s not so bad?
Food
The normal tze char kind of dishes they offer is honestly quite mediocre. Compare it with Tian Wai Tian Steamboat’s one, this one definately loses out. I mean it isn’t bad, it’s just very normal.
The common complain I’ve heard are from people who ordered Promfet steamboat, saying they were very stingy with the number of fish slices given. Well, promfet is a generally more expensive fish so I guess that’s why they couldn’t be more generous? Anyway we had a lot of chunky fish slices with our red grouper so yay to that!
Price
Total tab to our meal was SGD90.75 which is quite expensive.
Overall
I would come back again, but only with my parents. Considering how it’s perpetually crowded almost everyday during dinner time, this place is definitely worth trying at least once! But be sure to make a reservation first to avoid disappointment
556 Balestier Road
Singapore 329872
9769 4451 / 9127 6550
Lol I took Huiping’s advice and censored off all his clothings. I don’t want him kenna confinement
So after dinner Bernie took a train to Sembawang to book in and my sister and I left for City Hall. We were rushing because it was quite late and the human traffic is terrribly slow.
Yay to bigger crowd! It adds on the the atmosphere making this entire F1 race thingy more exciting
All was over, my sister got upset at Kimmi’s crash at the last 4 rounds. Certainly a bad bad bad season for Ferrari with all the crap they’ve been having Congrats to Alonso~! Yay to Renault! Heh, now I can proudly use my "Renault F1 Team" cap with pride.
I’ve decided – Hamilton and Kimmi both are so overrated. But check out…
MARK WEBBER~! Swoons.
Had a quick supper on the steps on The Glorious Dead.
I have videos of the zooming cars etc. but they’re probably not half as interesting as this:
There were performances going on in the F1 arena and we saw this really talented guy doing beatboxing!! Hard to imagine the motor mouth of his =X
But if you’re more interested in cars and the crashes (which you probably would have seen in HD quality back at home) I will upload it again tonight. Bernie’s booking out soon (wheeeee!) so I’ll check back again yap?
Take care sweetnums~!
